Digital Future-Proofing

Digital interoperability of existing and legacy assets is just the beginning

The need for secure interoperability in the battlespace, including in challenging signal-denied or degraded environments, is only going to increase, as defence systems become more tactical and fragmented, and forces look to maximise the use of AI and edge computing. 2iC’s unique digital interoperability software, powered by the 2iC invented, open standard Lean Services Architecture, is the future-proof solution.

Technology and vendor agnostic to maximise military technology investments

2iC has always worked to understand the needs of frontline operational units and define the necessary technical architectures to support their missions. This has resulted in the unique 2iC software-only solution being trialled and subsequently adopted by UK armed forces and other defence forces around the world, including the US, Australia and New Zealand.

A key message that 2iC imparts to defence forces and military programme partners is that the 2iC software enables the rapid, cost-effective digital interoperability of not only legacy and new systems, but also future investments. Critically, it does so irrespective of operating system, programming language, transport protocol and OEM.

Rapid integration and agility

Defence organisations must work out how to integrate and share data not just across major systems, aircraft, ships and land vehicles, but also across drones, mobile devices, and dismounted soldier systems (such as heads-up displays or physiological monitoring technology). Similarly, there is the need to share data underwater, as subsea vehicles such as small, unmanned submarines become more prevalent.

As new equipment and technologies becomes available to defence forces, that digital integration needs to take place in days and weeks, not years. And that’s exactly what the 2iC software solution enables. In short, 2iC software enables rapid, agile, digital onboarding on any military asset, now and in the future.

Leading edge technology in every sense

As the nature of defence and warfighting continues to change, such agility in digital interoperability in the battlespace will undoubtedly help defence forces to achieve digital and military overmatch, and to liberate human capability and improve mission outcomes.

2iC-enabled digital interoperability will, for example, assist forces in maximising the military possibilities presented by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, and particularly Edge AI.

Edge computing is part of a critical military transformation, allowing the processing and compute to happen a long way from the traditional IT enterprise or data centre – on the edge device itself and on the front lines of the actual mission.

Indeed, advances in edge computing have led to the concept of the “Digital Soldier” – soldiers using small, connected sensors that travel with them to enable local data sharing and processing across network participants to ensure digital overmatch, safety and mission advantage.

2iC trials and proof-of-concept

2iC has always worked to understand the needs of frontline operational units and to define the necessary technical architectures to support their missions.

As military imperatives and the needs of the warfighter continue to change at pace, 2iC will continue to develop its software to answer tomorrow’s questions.

Similarly, trials or proof-of-concept projects will continue to assure military leaders and decision-makers that the 2iC roadmap provides a definitive, cost-effective answer to their current and future digital interoperability challenges.
